Bringing the international forensic mental health community together

The International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services brought together more than 500 participants from 32 countries at Helsinki Congress Paasitorni in June 2026. The IAFMHS Annual Conference combined a strong scientific programme with opportunities for networking and professional exchange.

The conference programme included keynote presentations, workshops and parallel sessions, providing an international forum to share research, exchange perspectives and discuss developments in forensic mental health.

Learning extended beyond the lecture halls

Throughout the event, participants had opportunities to meet and build connections in more informal settings. The programme included a Welcome reception, Banquet dinner, 5K Fun run and Early career meet & greet. Award recipients were recognised for their contributions to the field and students had their own opportunity to connect during the IAFMHS Student breakfast. The relaxed morning brought students together over breakfast for conversation and networking.

The conference also gave some participants an opportunity to discover the Finnish approach to forensic psychiatric care first-hand. During a visit to a local hospital, attendees learned more about how forensic psychiatric services are structured and delivered within the Finnish system.

An outstanding setting for international exchange

Paasitorni’s distinctive architecture made a lasting impression on participants, many of whom regularly attend conferences around the world. The beauty of the venue, and the Congress Hall in particular, was a frequent talking point throughout the event.

The facilities and audiovisual technology supported the extensive programme, while the Paasitorni team was on hand to provide immediate assistance whenever needed. For the organisers, the attentive service began well before the conference: every request was addressed promptly and thoughtfully, helping ensure a smooth experience from preparation to the final sessions.

"The attention of Paasitorni staff prior to the event was also appreciated. Every request and need was addressed quickly and thoughtfully. I can’t recall a conference that ran more smoothly or was as well-received as the Paasitorni. I can’t recommend the Paasitorni strongly enough!" says Barry Rosenfeld, IAFMHS
